On Our Merry Way

On Our Merry Way
A rediscovered gem form the Golden Age of Cinema, "On Our Merry Way" (aka "A Miracle Can Happen") is a delectable, lighthearted comedy interweaving four different narratives, featuring Hollywood's brightest stars. James Stewart and Henry Fonda are at the peak of their form as a pair of impoverished swing band musicians who attempt to change their luck by rigging a talent contest (judged by Harry James and featuring Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer as a hep cat contestant). Based on a story by John O'Hara, the sequence was directed by John Huston, who was forced to leave the project to honor a prior commitment and whose directorial shoes were then filled by George Stevens (neither of whom receives on-screen credit). Dorothy Lamour costars as an aspiring actress who, in one unforgettable sequence, dons a Polynesian sarong in a hilarious spoof of exotic Hollywood musicals. Years before they would be teamed on TV's "My Three Sons," Fred Macmurray and William Demerest are traveling con men who fall into the snare of a maniacal ten-year-old named "Sniffles" Dugan. All these comical misadventures are woven together by an aspiring reporter (Burgess Meredith) who struggles to write a human interest piece to satisfy the professional ambitions of his young bride (Paulette Goddard). This Kino on Video edition was digitally mastered from the original 35mm nitrate negative.

The Forest of Wild Hands by Judy Michaels,
The Forest of Wild Hands by Judy Michaels,
In these moving poems, Judy Michaels illuminates an intense period of five years in her life: against a backdrop that celebrates her young students, and enduring marriage, and the power of music and mountains, she writes about the sudden loss of her mother to cancer, her father's ensuing depression and alcoholism, and her own experience with ovarian cancer. Michaels's witty, passionate style and wide range of subject matter set her collection above raw confessionalism -- as the title of one poem asserts, "You Don't Need Another Cancer Poem". With its fresh look at all-too-familiar situations, the narrative establishes a spirit of celebration and independence that accounts for the poet's resilience in the face of loss. She tells us about cheese-rolling contests in England, what it's like to have a mother with emerald-chocolate-streak eyes, and how to teach jumping at a teachers' convention. One poem delineates the anatomy and metaphysics of viola jokes. Another implies that French kissing is just as good at 54 as at 17. Favorite poets drift through the book, too -- Jane Kenyon, Akhmatova and Tsvetayeva, Bishop and Rukeyser, Basho, Shikibu, and Rumi. And when, near the end, Michaels envisions putting her mother on the Brooklyn ferry, a tactless but reassuring Walt Whitman is on board.
